What are Insulated Traction Motor Bearings?

Insulated Traction Motor Bearings are specialised bearings designed to prevent electrical current from passing through the bearing, thus protecting it from electrical damage. Primarily used in traction motors, the key components in electric vehicles, it gives safety and reliability for all other applications from electrical discharge. It is made up of the following components:

  • Insulation Layer: A non-conductive layer applied to the bearing’s outer or inner ring.
  • Bearing Components: Rolling elements (balls or rollers), raceways, and cages similar to standard bearings but with the added insulation.

Materials used are mainly high-quality steel with an insulating coating of ceramic, polymer, or other non-conductive materials. The insulating layer provides the necessary protection against electrical currents.
